College celebrates Commencement week

North Central Michigan College celebrates the successful end of the 2012-2013 academic year with graduation ceremonies this week.

The Nurse Pinning Ceremony will be on Thursday, May 9 at 7 p.m. in the Student and Community Resource Center gymnasium. The speaker for the Pinning will be Daphne Weston, a house supervisory from McLaren Northern Michigan. The college will be graduating 33 nursing students this year.

Commencement will be held on Friday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the gymnasium. This year's speaker will be Emilee Kennedy, North Central graduate and primary care nurse. The college will graduate 276 students with 291 total degrees, of which 220 are associate degrees, 48 certificates of development and 23 certificates. There are 41 students graduating with Distinction, 28 with High Distinction and 22 with Highest Distinction.

Prior to this week's festivities, North Central recognized 68 honors graduates at its annual luncheon on April 26. On April 23, North Central honored members of our college community at a Recognition Tea. Twelve employees were recognized for their five-, ten- and fifteen-year anniversaries. Three retiring employees were recognized for their years of service. Retiring are Eunice Teel, librarian, Jolene Amo, executive secretary to the President and Jennifer Lempke, mathematics instructor. The Employees of the Year for 2012-2013 were announced. Wendy Fought, director of student outreach and engagement received the Full-Time Professional Staff award. Melissa Colby, VA Certifying Official in Student Services received the Full-Time Support Staff Award. Brian Patten, EMT and paramedic instructor received the Part-Time Staff award. On Sunday, April 14, 64 students were inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, a national honor society for two-year college students. To be inducted into PTK, a student must have completed at least 12 credits at North Central, and have a 3.5 grade point average.

Summer hours will begin on Monday, May 13 and run through Friday, August 16. North Central administrative and business offices, including student services, are open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Friday, 8:30 a.m. until noon. These hours are in effect until Monday, August 19 when regular business hours resume. For a detailed listing of summer hours, visit www.ncmich.edu.
