On Tuesday, July 30 the Crooked Tree Arts Center will be hosting the fourth distinguished speaker in it's Harbor Springs Summer Friends Lecture Series. Susan E. Riley, Fashion Designer, will be giving a lecture entitled "Yachting & Fashion" at the Harbor Springs Library in downtown Harbor Springs.
Riley began her career in Harbor Springs with her first trunk show 19 years ago at the Harborside Hotel. After the success of her reception, she relocated to West Palm Beach, Florida, opening a full boutique which is still serves her clients the same timeless fashion. Riley says she gets her inspiration from original couture designers such as Christian Dior, Valentino Garavani, and Hubert de Givenchy.
"They made beautiful well-tailored clothing," Riley said. "A lot of that kind of design is missing today." She added that her love for those designers and their clothing styles came from growing up in New York City surrounded by fashion. Riley said her design aesthetic is to create made-to-order clothing using sumptuous fabrics and textures. "I believe in a return to feminine, ladylike fashions -- clothes that are sensual without being overt," Riley noted.
In her lecture, Riley will trace the evolution of Yachting and Fashion through slides and with many interesting tidbits, including information on how yachting was considered a rich man's sport until the advent of fiberglass; looking at what was considered proper Yachting attire, and how that has evolved over the years. Reiley will look at the history of the sport, as much as sportswear, and her lecture will cover a great era in fashion.
All Harbor Springs Summer Friends Lecture Series events begin with light bites being served at 4pm, followed by lectures at 4:30 p.m.
Seat reservations are limited. The cost to reserve a seat is $15 per lecture and may be made online at www.crookedtree.org or by calling Crooked Tree Arts Center at 231-347-4337.
