Emmet County Recycling's last public shredding event of 2013 will be held Saturday, September 21 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Emmet County Drop-off Center, 7363 Pleasantview Road, Harbor Springs. A professional document destruction company will be shredding on site. Cost is $5 per small-bankers-box-size box or two brown paper grocery bags full. The shredded paper will be recycled and certificates of destruction will be available to businesses upon request. Emmet County Recycling will also be collecting latex paints and stains for recycling that same morning. There is a $1 per gallon can (or equivalent) charge to recycling latex paints.
Emmet County Recycling, offers free recycling of all electronics all the time. Free electronics recycling is made possible by a 2008 Michigan law requiring manufacturers who sell computers and TVs in the state to provide a free and convenient way for customers to recycle their old computers and TVs. The facility is open from 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturdays and is closed Sundays and major holidays. The Manna Food Project in Harbor Springs, is calling for volunteers for packing and repacking food products in the Manna warehouse. Distributing 1.7 million pounds of food product to over 35 area pantries and 44,000 families is no easy task without the support of volunteers. Students, service groups, senior groups, scout troops, families and individuals are all welcome to be part of Manna's volunteer army. Caregiver Support Group, Are you providing care for someone needing support through a chronic condition or illness, a special needs child or family member, someone in hospice? Are you looking for a chance to meet with others in similar situations also providing care to talk and listen, and provide mutual support? You are welcome at the new Caregiver Support Group meeting a the First Presbyterian Church in Harbor Springs. The group has decided to try a format that meets on the second and fourth Mondays of the month, alternating between an evening meeting (2nd Mondays) and an early afternoon meeting (4th Mondays). The next meeting will be Monday, September 23 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m, in the lower level at the church. The Rev. David Van Dam moderates this group, and is gifted in caring support, and has hospice respite caregiver experience. Caregiver's Support Group is open to everyone in the Harbor/Petoskey and surrounding community. The Presbyterian church is located at 7940 Cemetery Rd., Harbor Springs. Survivors of Suicide Support Group meetings, are on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays ( of each month at 6:00 pm at the Boyne City Library. A group of adults who have lost someone to suicide now meets and safe supportive place. They share the memories and celebrate the lives of their loved ones. This is an initiative by the Human Services Coordinating Body Suicide Prevention Workgroup for Charlevoix and Emmet Counties. For more information contact Greg Billiard 231-590-0587.
CLIMB, is a program through McLaren-Northern Michigan to provide emotional support to children (ages 5-12) who have a parent or other loved one diagnosed with cancer. Children's Lives Include Moments of Bravery. Through CLIMB, art and play activities help children to understand and develop coping skills. Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, is a support group for custodial relative caregivers of children.
