Internationally known artist, Susan Blackwood will conduct a painting workshop at Crooked Tree Arts Center July 7-10. Class meets from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with an additional evening session highlighting how to capture images for later use in painting.
The workshop will focus on painting water, a perfect topic for Northern Michigan. Ms. Blackwood will take students on a journey capturing dew, raindrops, waves, and the ocean or in this workshop our freshwater seas.
"Capturing water can be one of the trickiest things for an artist to do. The light is ever changing, the movement, the time of day- it all matters. And artists in Northern Michigan know this well, with such a beautiful abundance of opportunities here to paint water! Ms. Blackwood will be covering water in most of its forms- journeying from capturing the smallest of dew drops and water droplets to the beautiful movement of our area rivers and lakes to the majesty of waves during sunset. Her ability to truly render water is breathtaking," states Valerie St. Pierre Smith, Program Director at Crooked Tree Arts Center.
"I have chosen as my subject matter the simple, beautiful touching moments that are common both in nature in the life of every person." Blackwood comments on her art. "These are the moments that often pass without notice and are the very ones that lend continuity to our lives and contribute to its richness and depth. These moments are the language I use when I paint."
Ms. Blackwood, was awarded Signature Membership in the prestigious Oil Painters of America group whose work was shown at Crooked Tree Arts Center last summer. Blackwood has won numerous Best of Show awards including one she considers her most exciting honor and award the "Best of Show American Women Artists National Juried Exhibition".
Blackwood has been teaching workshops around the country and overseas in Pakistan, the Bahamas, Great Brittan, France, and Italy. She shares her 32 years of skill in watercolor painting as well as her new love - oil painting - with her students. This a wonderful opportunity for artists and hobbiests with some painting experience.
