Week in Weather

Week's High: Sun, May 19, 78

Week's Low: Fri, May 17, 38

Note has to be made of the devastating tornado that hit Moore, OK on Monday. Our thoughts are with all those affected by the unimaginable grief and horror of that event. Here in northern Michigan we had a pleasant weekend and week with temperatures ranging in the mid 50s-mid 70s. Gardens are being planted, some early vegetables are well on their way, lilacs are in bloom, and outdoor enthusiasts are now running, walking, biking, playing tennis - no swimming yet however! Our town is ready for the Memorial weekend - and we welcome everyone to enjoy it with us.

Commencement Exercises

For the Thurston family of Harbor Springs, May 4, 2013 was an extremely complicated day. Their son, Devin Thurston, was graduating from Northern Michigan University at 10:30am, up in Marquette. Their daughter, Jennise Thurston, was graduating from Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant at 1pm.

After contemplating the possibility of getting someone to fly them from one ceremony to the other, the Thurstons gave up and divided their celebrations. Mom, Judy Thurston, went north to Marquette and sent texts and pictures to dad throughout Devin's ceremony. Dad, Gary Thurston, went south to Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant and did the same for Judy. They were very thankful for the technology that allowed them to share this day with both kids.

Deven and Jennise Thurston each graduated Magna Cum Laude from their universities. Devin's degree as a secondary history teacher has landed him an exciting teaching job in the Alaskan bush, where he will teach all subjects to nine students. Jennise has received a graduate assistantship at Central Michigan University, and will start her Masters program in Fashion Design and Merchandising in the fall.

Blood Drive

On Friday, May 24, The Kiwanis Club of Harbor Springs and the American Red Cross will once again hold a community blood at the Holy Childhood of Jesus Parish Hall from noon to 5:45 pm. Their goal for this May drive is to collect 48 good units of blood. If you are at least 17 years old (16 with parental permission in some states), in good health and weigh not less than 110 pounds you are a candidate to donate blood. If you would like to schedule an appointment or for more information, call Red Cross 231-347-5984 ext 109. Donors without an appointment are always welcome.

On Saturday, May 25 there will be a Food Drive at the Harbor IGA to benefit the Harbor Springs Community Food Pantry. Volunteers will be at the door with a list of items needed and a special shopping bag for you to use. The Drive will run from about 10 am-6 pm and all donations go to our local food pantry. For more details, call Diane MacKenzie, 526-1446.
