Camp Daggett has learned that the Doll-Loesel Foundation in Bay City, Michigan, has agreed to match contributions for the 5th Annual Kayak for a Cause on Walloon Lake, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, July 20-21, 2013 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The Doll-Loesel Foundation, a private, independent foundation, has pledged a dollar-for-dollar match of all money raised up to $20,000.
Camp Daggett Adventure Center (CDAC) is hosting the 5th annual Kayak for a Cause on Walloon Lake fundraising event. A team of 30 or more adult men and women who enjoy the sport of recreational kayaking will tour 30 miles of shore line around Walloon Lake lead by Karen Marietti, director of the CDAC. Kayakers can choose a one- or two-day adventure.
Last year, twenty kayakers raised close to $10,000 for scholarships for Camp Daggett's Adventure Center. In 2013, the Camp Daggett Adventure Center Steering Committee is hoping to raise $20,000. With the matching grant, Camp Daggett could potentially raise $40,000 for scholarships for schools and youth to participate in its Adventure Center teambuilding programs. These programs encourage teamwork and group cooperation toward common goals, improve self-confidence and self-esteem and foster a greater acceptance for diversity among people.
Kayakers are asked to raise a minimum of $150 with the One-day option on Saturday or Sunday or a minimum of $300 for the two-day, 30-mile paddle. New this year, kayakers can dedicate their pledges to a specific school or school district. Joyce Riordan and Mary Ling, kayakers on the team and trustees of the Petoskey Education Foundation, are dedicating the pledges they raise to Petoskey Public Schools. "This dollar-for-dollar match by the Doll-Loesel Foundation is so exciting," says Joyce Riordan, event co-chair. "It's really important that Petoskey residents see the advantage of this grant knowing that their donation to Mary and I will not only double but will go directly to the students of Petoskey to help reduce the costs of participating in the Adventure Center Programs."
Interested kayakers are invited to the Kayak for a Cause Launch Party, Thursday, May 23 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Mackinaw Trails Winery south of Petoskey.
