With school bells soon ringing, members of the Harbor Springs Board of Education were forward-focused at their regular monthly meeting Monday, August 19, approving coaches, contracts, and events to kick off the 2013-2014 academic year.
New athletic director, Adam Wood, was approved as the varsity basketball coach. Wood, who coached and worked most recently in Charlevoix, is an extremely exciting addition to the Rams athletic staff, superintendent Mark Tompkins said in a phone interview Tuesday morning.
"We're thrilled to have him on board and look forward to seeing what he'll do with the program. We're already impressed with his work as the athletic director," Tompkins noted.
The board also approved a freshman girls volleyball team, with Katlyn Morse as coach.
In other athletic news, the district is hosting a two day "paint bee" at the Ottawa Stadium concession stand August 23-24.
"This Friday and Saturday, we are asking the community to come help us repaint the concession stand, which is, quite frankly, an eyesore right now," Tompkins said. "We are prepping the building this week, and we will be there painting from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. We have all the necessary equipment ready to go, and we'll provide lunch and snacks to anyone who comes to help."
Board members also approved one year support staff contracts. The biggest changes, in addition to state-mandated "hard caps" on health insurance, are as followings: there will be no salary increase unless the board is able to put $110,000 into savings at the end of the fiscal year (if that happens, a one-percent increase will occur); the first two snow days of the year will also be unpaid (last year, the district had nine snow days, all of which were paid).
"We'll be having a special board meeting next week to finalize teacher contracts as well," Tompkins said.
All board meetings are posted and open to the public. For information or meeting minutes, visit the district's website, www.harborps.org.
