9/3/2013 2:19:00 PM Small aircraft crashed in Wilderness State Park last weekend

According to a news release form the Emmet County Sheriff's Office, an aircraft crash occurred on Friday, August 30, at approximately 9:08 p.m., in Wilderness State Park, inland from Big Stone Bay, Bliss Township. According to Sheriff Pete Wallin, a small aircraft went down in route from Chicago to St. Ignace. The pilot, age 55, from Evanston, IL, was on final approach to St. Ignace, when the aircraft started experiencing engine problems. The plane went down in Wilderness State Park. The pilot and his passenger, age 56, from Chicago, IL, were both transported to McLaren-Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey to be evaluated.
The Emmet County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Carp Lake Fire Department, Mackinac City Ambulance, Emmet County Search and Rescue, Emmet EOC, and Michigan DNR Park Rangers. The FFA has been contacted and will be responding to the scene.
