Half marathon set to run around the Bay Saturday

There's nothing quite like starting the day with a run around the bay. This Saturday, September 28 more than 130 runners from seven different states will be doing just that during the first annual Little Traverse Bay Half Marathon.

The point-to-point route begins in Bay Harbor with a "Ready, Set, Go!" at 8:00AM, taking runners on a diverse and historic shoreline tour to the finish line in Harbor Springs.

More than 50 volunteers will be stationed along the way to keep runners on course, hand out water, and most importantly, to cheer for them. Spectators can take in the action from plenty of places along the route, but the best spots with easy parking for spectators include Magnus Park, anywhere along Bayfront Park at the Petoskey waterfront, behind Glens grocery store on the Little Traverse Wheelway, by the Harbormaster on Bay Street in Harbor Springs and of course, at the finish line.

The finish line action at Zorn Park/City Beach in Harbor Springs will begin around 9:00-9:15 a.m. when the first runners are expected to cross the line. The bulk of runners will be coming through the chute between 10:00-10:25 a.m.. The free Kids Run starts at 10:30 a.m. from Zorn Park for kids ages four and up. Awards will be given at 11:30 a.m.. The Harbor Springs Farmer's Market also will be in full swing, making Zorn Park a fun, family destination for this Saturday morning.

The Outfitter of Harbor Springs is directing the race and asks that both drivers and runners use caution as the last part of the route is on open roads from the intersection of Beach Road and M-119 passing by the historic resort communities of Menonaqua, Ramona Park, Roaring Brook and Wequetonsing to Bay Street in Harbor Springs.

Come out and celebrate all the runners (ages 17-69), our small towns, and Little Traverse Bay! Proceeds will benefit Top of Michigan Trails Council and the Little Traverse Bay Protection and Restoration Fund.

Note: online registration closes at midnight on Thursday, September 25; day-before registration is from noon-7:00 p.m. at The Outfitter in Harbor Springs and there will be no day-of registration. For more information and to register: www.outfitterharborsprings.com.
