3/12/2014 12:01:00 AM Board approves two year
administrators Ninth grade athletic teams may be cut
The Harbor Springs Board of Education approved two year contracts for all of the district's administrators during its regular monthly meeting Monday, March 10.
The administrative team includes the superintendent and his staff, as well as building principals and district directors (like Community Schools and Technology).
The board also set in motion a change in athletics policy to eliminate ninth grade teams.
"The only sports in our district to ever have ninth grade teams are basketball and volleyball," said superintendent Mark Tompkins. "We often hear there is a need for a team, but numbers don't necessarily support this, and it is hard to schedule games as so few area schools have ninth grade programs."
Tompkins said the district will continue to fund middle school programs, as well as Junior Varsity and Varsity programs.
"Like all policy changes, this is the start of a three month review," Tompkins noted. "Anyone who would like to comment on this change during the review period is welcome to do so."
The Harbor Springs Board of Education meets on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the middle school's large group instruction room. Meetings are open to the community, and agendas, as well as past meetings' minutes, are available on the district's website, www.harborps.org.
