The sixth annual Little Traverse Triathlon is set for Sunday, July 13 in downtown Harbor Springs. The event includes a 600 meter swim which starts and ends at the Zoll Street beach; a 19.6 mile bicycle ride from Jean Jardine Park adjacent to City Hall out M-119 along the 'Tunnel of Trees' and back to the park where the four mile run takes off along Beach Drive. The finish, awards and registration all take place in the park.
"You couldn't find a nicer venue," said race director and owner of Bay Tennis and Fitness Tom Behan. "It's probably the most beautiful scenery of any triathlon anywhere."
The event is described as: "A fun, family event open to all ages and abilities. Everyone is welcome. First time triathletes, serious racers, and relay teams are encouraged to enter."
The triathlon averages about 150 participants.
The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports has recognized the Little Traverse Triathlon as a quality physical activity event. As a result, the Little Traverse Triathlon will be included in the Pure Michigan FITness Series endorsement program.
The Pure Michigan FITness Series endorses local, regional and state events to acknowledge an organization's ability to plan and carry out a quality event that significantly contributes to the health and well-being of Michigan's residents.
"By endorsing local events all across the state, we hope to bring attention to the importance of physical activity and encourage our citizens to take responsibility for their health," said Marilyn Lieber, president and CEO of the Governor's Council. "These local events can have a tremendous impact on health care costs that present a significant challenge for our state's economy."
One racer from 2013 offered the following: "I was a first year participant in the Little Traverse Triathlon this year, and I really enjoyed it. You have one of the best courses in the state of Michigan."
