7/2/2014 12:01:00 AM Emmet County collecting car and truck tires at no charge through July 15
Emmet County Recycling (ECR) will continue collecting car and light truck tires for free through Tuesday, July 15. Tires may be dropped off during regular business hours at the Drop-off Center on Pleasantview Road.
ECR has accepted tires for recycling since 2006. There is usually a fee to recycle tires: $2.50 each for car and light truck tires and higher fees for larger truck and tractor tires. This year ECR applied for and was awarded a Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) grant to collect scrap tires for free. The grant allows up to 10,000 tires to be received for free on a first come, first served basis. Once the limit is reached, ECR will go back to charging $2.50/tire.
The recycling program kicked off the free tire collection with a public event on Saturday, June 14. Between 9:00 and noon that day they collected over 1,200 tires-roughly 400 per hour! A customer reported that one of the tires he was recycling was 100 years old. Another came in three times that morning with loads of tires she'd pulled from area forests. If the grant funds are not used up by July 15another event may be scheduled in August.
The grant covers only tires from households; tires from businesses will not be accepted for free. To be covered by the free offer, tires must be four feet in diameter or less and 12 inches wide or less. A maximum of seven tires per load is permitted, but individuals may bring in multiple loads. Those planning to bring more than 7 tires are asked to call 231-348-0640 to schedule their drop off(s).
The Emmet County Drop-off Center is located at 7363 Pleasantview Road, Harbor Springs. The facility is open from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on weekdays and 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays.
