Leonard M. Ward 87 of Harbor Springs passed away May 21, 2013 at his home.

He was born July 23, 1926 at Five Mile Creek near Harbor Springs to Denton and Myrtle (Howse) Ward. He attended Five Mile Creek school and Harbor Springs Schools. He served in the US Navy during WWII and was stationed on the hospital ship "Benevolence".

On May 16, 1946 he married Dorothyann Mathison in Harbor Springs where

they made their home. Leonard worked for several area plumbers before earning his Master Plumber's License and starting his own business as Leonard's Plumbing and Heating. He also owned the Shell Gas station in Harbor Springs for a couple of years. He retired in 1987.

Leonard served on the Harbor Springs Fire Dept. for many years and was awarded the key to the city for his rescue of three people from a burning home. He spent 3 days in the hospital from burns he received during the rescue. He was also active in the Smith-Hoover Post of the American Legion and had served as post commander. He also served on the City Council and was the Emmet County Drain Commissioner for many years. Leonard enjoyed golf, snowmobiling, boating, fishing and hunting.

Leonard is survived by his daughters Debra Norris (Carl) of Harbor Springs, Celestine Young (John) of Kewadin, Mi., Sharalen Greenwell (Don) of Petoskey, grandchildren Annaka, Colista, Carl II, Bert, Nathan, Joshua and a great granddaughter Tessa. Also surviving are his brother Rick (Marge), and sister Doreen Sommerville (Jack).

Leonard was preceded in death by his wife Dorothyann, brother Robert and daughters Jeannie Arquette and Sharon Louise Ward.

Funeral services will be held on Fri. May 24 at 10:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Harbor Springs. Pastor Mary Sweet will officiate. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thurs. from 6-8:00 PM at Schiller Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family to be used for charitable purposes.
