Beverly Jane LaForest 84 of Tower, Michigan. passed away June 16, 2013 at Bay Bluffs Medical Care Facility in Harbor Springs.
Beverly was born July 1, 1928 in Webster, S. Dakota to Rudolph and Rosina (Becht) Kaplan. She was raised on the family farm. She attended and graduated from Catholic School, where she spent her winters in the convent in order to attend classes. As fate would have it she found herself quickly back on the family farm helping her mother after the sudden death of her father. Fate also was there on a Saturday night when she and a friend decided to go to the roller skating rink, because the fellows in town from Michigan that were helping to restore electricity after a spring ice storm were also there. It was there she met her husband to be Joe LaForest. The couple were married on May 20, 1950 and moved to Tower, Mi. to live on the family farm. After a few brief moves they settled there permanently and raised 8 children.
Bev had the grit it took to live through tough times, being frugal, crafty, sensible and fun. She made the best of any situation and always had the ability to solve any problem. She often referred to herself as "the chief cook and bottle washer". These qualities she handed down to her children knowing they would be essential to a good life. Although she was always busy with her chores she always found time to make each birthday and holiday special.
Alzheimer's disease took away her mind but not before she placed dozens of notes all around her home that read "remember me with smiles and laughter, if you can only remember me with tears then don't remember me at all".
Bev was preceded in death by her husband Joe in 1987, parents, sons John and Tony and siblings Quentin Kaplan and Georgia Stover. She is survived by her children Joseph R. LaForest of Gaylord, Mark (Julia) LaForest of Louisianna, Mike (Tony) LaForest of Wisconsin, Patti (Tom) Swiss of Harbor Springs, Andy (Sara) LaForest of California, Jim (Alex) LaForest of London, UK, grandchildren Joseph S. (Lindee) LaForest, Eric (Toni) LaForest, Matt (Anna) LaForest, Devereux (LaToya) LaForest, Marguette LaForest, Mark (Heather) Bishop, Patrick Berryer, Arianne Berryer, Christopher LaForest and 6 great grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Fri. June 21 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Onaway, Michigan. Fr. Peter Eke will be the celebrant. Interment will take place in St. Paul's Cemetery. Friends may call at the church beginning at 10:00 AM. A visitation will be held on Thurs. from 6-8:00 PM at Schiller Funeral Home in Harbor Springs.
