Arthur Hackman

Arthur Joseph Hackman 77 of Harbor Springs died peacefully at home Sunday September 8, 2013 with his family by his side. Art was born in Detroit, MI on October 24, 1935 to Arthur and Madeline (Mortier) Hackman. He lived in Grosse Pointe until 1987 when he moved to Harbor Springs. Art graduated from Grosse Pointe High School and attended Wayne State University then took over the family machine tool business, American Lap Company.

In 1957, Art married Alice Buchanan and they spent the next 56 years together happily raising 4 sons and 1 daughter, Arthur (Debra) of Frankenmuth, MI, Glen (Tracy) of Bloomfield MI, Alan (Amy) of Harbor Springs, Robert of Long Beach CA and Laura (Gerry) Chamberlin of Harbor Springs. Art loved to travel with his children while they were young. He taught them all to ski, sail, and most importantly how to become the people they are today.

The love of Art's life was enjoying his grandchildren. He has 7 granddaughters, Maggie (Jake), Katie, Abby, Kelsey, Alix, Lilly, Lucy and a grandson, Teddy. He loved nothing more than supporting every grandchild in whatever endeavor they chose to take on. Whether it was golf, hockey, volleyball, skiing, swimming, tennis, sailing, or soccer, Art was right there supporting them and cheering them on. He devoted his life to caring for and loving all of his grandchildren. They will all remember him as being their number one fan.

Art was an avid tennis player as well as a fan. He introduced and taught this game to his whole family. He was very thankful for his wonderful friends in the tennis community.

He also loved boating, sports car racing, and spending his time enjoying his family and Northern Michigan.

Art is survived by his wife, five children, and eight grandchildren, as well as two sisters, Madeline and Jeanette of Grosse Pointe, MI.

The family is very grateful to Hospice of Little Traverse Bay for their wonderful care. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a memorial donation to Hospice Of Little Traverse Bay. There will be a public viewing at Schiller Funeral home Wednesday, September 11 from 10:00 through 11:30 am with a service conducted by Mr. Larry Funk at 11:30. Interment will take place in Holy Childhood Cemetery.

A reception for family and friends will take place on Wednesday at the Birchwood Country Club from 4-6 pm.
