Janet Elizabeth Kopka passed peacefully in Northern Michigan, Wednesday, September 4, 2013 with her husband of 65 years, Donald, at her side.
Jan was born October 27, 1928, in Morrocco, Indiana to her beloved parents Mary Jane and James Plummer Schooley. A member of the oft-unheralded women of the Greatest Generation, she waited for her sailor to return from World War II to be married.
Jan and Don have two children, Susan and husband Steve Smiley and Jim, and three grandchildren, Pine, Lauren and Jackson, who survive her with nothing but love and respect for all she gave throughout her life.
She was a devoted wife and mother who handled the many difficult challenges of a fledgling marriage while her husband embarked on a successful career in the auto industry, and provided a beautiful household, love, praise and guidance for her children as they went through the rigors of stepping toward adulthood. She was a compassionate and caring woman with many friends, and an energetic and capable volunteer with Musicale, and St. Joes of Pontiac drug rehabilitation program. Known for her blue eyes and beautiful smile, she was an alluring conversationalist, more than willing to hear anyone's tale of triumph or tears. Jan and Don had a dream life, full of travel, adventure and love, both of them avid skiers and golfers into their 80's! We know she is at peace in the place where the brave, sweet and loving go after their time on earth. She will be missed by many, none more so than her husband and two children.
