Thomas Allin "Al" Winnard of Royal Oak and Harbor Springs (Wequetonsing Association) passed away September 11, 2013, at the "Beehive", his Wequetonsing home.
He was born November 2, 1923, in Dearborn, MI, to James and Catherine (Allin) Winnard. After serving in WWII in the US Army Air Force, he attended Michigan State University, where he met his future wife, Dorothy "Frill" Milliken. The couple were married on August 28, 1948, and honeymooned at her family's cottage in Wequetonsing.
A big State fan, Al gently nudged all six of his children into degree programs at his favorite institution. A scholarship for students from Emmet County bears his and Frill's names.
The self proclaimed "luckiest guy in the world" spent much of his thirty five year retirement walking the course at Harbor Point Golf Club. After his round, he would shoot the breeze with his pals on the Weque grounds crew, then head to the porch for a scotch with Frill.
He is survived by his cherished wife Frill, children Phyllis (Dick Gordon) Richmond, Janet (Bill) Stuart, Margo (Tom) Czinski, Carole (Gregg) Brumm, Mark (Therese) Winnard, and James (Melissa Aaron) Winnard; 13 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, his sister Betty Robbins, sister in law Ruth Milliken and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Allison.
A celebration of Al's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family encourages donations be made to the Little Traverse Conservancy, the MSU Winnard Spartan Scholarship Fund AFF0098, or the Alzheimers Association Greater Michigan Chapter
