Bill Slocum of Naples, Florida died on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at age 92.
Bill was born in Farmington, MI to Edessa (Warner) and William W. Slocum, Sr. October 18, 1921. He graduated in 1939 from Cranbrook School, Bloomfield Hills, MI, in 1943 from Swarthmore College Swarthmore. PA, and from the University of Michigan Law School, Ann Arbor, MI in 1949.
He served in the United States Coast Guard from 1943-1946 with the rank of Lieut. S.G. at discharge. He was a member of the Michigan State Bar Assoc., Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity. He practiced law from 1949-1986, with the Hill, Lewis firm, both in Detroit and in Birmingham, MI. He was a founding member and first treasurer of the Birmingham Athletic Club, President and Trustee of the George M. and Mabel H. Slocum Foundation, a former member and board member of the Naples Yacht Club, former member of Royal Poinciana Country Club, Moorings Presbyterian Church, past member of Birchwood Farms Golf and Country Club in Harbor Springs, MI.
He is survived by his wife Joan Kennedy Slocum whom he married in 1948, four daughters, Anne Slocum Nelson (David) of Denver, CO, Libby Slocum of Paw Paw, MI, Jody Slocum Buetow (Kurt) of Downing, WI, Meg Slocum Cusack (Kevin) of Grand Rapids, MI. His daughter Amy Slocum predeceased him in 2008. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Jake, Rachael (Joe), Joanie, Leighton, Alex, Wilson, and Peter Cusack and Stefan (Jenna) and Matt Buetow; two great-granddaughters Lux and Joan Ringenberg; a sister Susan Klingbeil (William) of Charlevoix, MI and many nieces and nephews.
Bill and Joan had a summer home at Birchwood Golf & Country Club from 1978- 2004. He is brother in law of Ann (Dave) Irish and son-in-law of Elizabeth Kennedy, who donated the land for Thorne Swift Nature Preserve in Harbor Springs. Bill was proud to be one of the earliest subscribers to the Harbor Light newspaper and remained a subscriber for over 30 years!
On July 24, 2013 Bill and Joan celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary and on October 18, 2013 Bill celebrated his 92nd birthday. His interests included squash, golf, reading and conversation. A fond memory for him was getting a hole-in-one at an office party during a rainstorm. Up until one week before he
died, he read through the entire NY Times and the Wall Street Journal every day as well as many historical books and monthly newsletters. He was interested in and a great encourager to every person he met. He was beloved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.
