Tess House Rhodes, 58, of St. Augustine, Florida passed away peacefully on October 1, 2013, the Feast Day of St. Therese. She was the beloved wife of Charles D. "Josh" Rhodes, who survives. The daughter of Kathleen and James D. House, Tess was born and raised in Bay City, Michigan and attended school there, then later graduated from Western Michigan University with a B.A. in Art History.
During her childhood, she and her family had spent many summers at Seven Mile Point, fostering in her a deep love of northern Michigan. This led Tess to move to Harbor Springs in 1975. Fondly known by the nickname "T.K.", her lively spirit and creative business pursuits endeared her to many.
Tess moved to Florida in 1983 and worked as a professional event planner in the Palm Beach area. It was there she and Josh were introduced by Tess' best friend Cynthia Haynes. From the moment of Tess and Josh's first date, each felt this was a lifelong "great love", and on July 1, 1989, at Holy Childhood of Jesus Church in Harbor Springs, they were united in marriage.
Tess had a graceful and kind way of expressing generosity and compassion for those less fortunate. She assisted hospice patients, created beautiful gardens for individuals as well as for organizations and adopted several rescue pets. She remained a very open-minded seeker of knowledge, especially in the areas of theology, music, art and horticulture. Her Tess was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Judith House McElroy and her brother, James Edwin House. She is survived by her husband, Josh, her sisters, Colleen House Gizzi (John) and Anne House Quinn (Tony) of Washington, DC, her sisters-in-law, Jeanie Rhodes of Traverse City and Mary Anne Larzelere (John) of East Lansing as well as her many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 25 at Holy Childhood of Jesus Church, 150 W. Main Street, Harbor Springs, Michigan.
Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery. A visitation with family will be held, beginning at 10 a.m., in the church narthex. In keeping with Tess' heartfelt ways of giving, contributions may be made in her memory to a favorite charity whose goals reflect love, kindness, peace and harmony.
