Mary Pellegrom

Long-time resident, Mary Ellen Pellegrom, died peacefully in her sleep July 18, 2014 at her daughter's home in Harbor Springs. She was 81 and had been in declining health for the last several months.

Mary was the daughter of Abram and Jane Bulthuis of Grand Haven, Michigan where she grew up and attended the local schools. It was also in Grand Haven where she met her late husband, Rodger Pellegrom, newly home from combat action in Korea. They settled down and had five children.

In a spirit of adventure and ambition, Rodger enrolled in The Culinary Institute of America in New York State. Within short years following his graduation he took the post of Food Service Director at Boyne Highlands Resort Hotel. The management at Boyne came to recognize an experienced retail manager in Mary and developed the Lobby Gift Shop which they turned over to her for the next 20-plus years. It was in the Gift Shop that she came to know many of the regular guests of the hotel, frequently visiting some of them in their home towns.

Mary is survived by five wonderful children: Stephen (Caroline) of Portland OR, Howard (Cheryl) of Harbor Springs, Thomas (Tamara) of Kenai AK, Daniel, and Margaret Pellegrom, both of Harbor Springs. There are ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mary also leaves two younger brothers, Thomas, Chapel Hill NC and David, Coral Springs FL. Her family was her greatest joy.

For her entire life in Harbor Springs Mary was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Harbor Springs, adding her voice to the choir for many of those years. Another of her enthusiasms in her later years was college basketball. She was an avid fan of both of the State's Big Ten teams.

A memorial celebration of Mary Pellegrom's life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Harbor Springs on Monday, August 18 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Harbor Springs,fpchs.org, or the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society, ltbhs.com. Condolences may be posted at stonefuneralhomeinc.com.
