To the Editor:
Regarding the downtown waterfront design plan, I urge the planners to make the new waterfront area entirely smoke-free. Outdoor smoking bans are increasingly popular, and a smoke-free waterfront would encourage the healthy, active lifestyle that Harbor Springs promotes.
There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke, and even short-term exposure can cause immediate adverse health effects, especially respiratory and cardiovascular effects.
So why not preserve our waterfront's "breathtaking" views by ensuring that no one has to breathe stinky and unhealthy tobacco smoke -- no ifs, ands, or butts!
