Cynthia Morse Zumbaugh
One of my favorite things in Harbor Springs High School is the hallway with all of the senior photos from graduating classes through the years. It offers such a wonderful sense of continuity; I've heard kids giggling at the pictures of the parents or grandparents and that's fun. Let's face it, we all think that the styles of the classes before and after us are silly.
Earlier this year, Shauna Simkins had the idea that it would be nice to have a similar display for all of those graduates who are veterans, she went to the powers that be at the school and got a go ahead for her project.
Obviously this includes anyone who graduated from Harbor Springs High School, but she also would like to include staff and those who maybe weren't able to graduate because they left school early, but they did serve.
In Shauna's words, "This is for ALL our Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, Sailors, Coast Guard and Guardsmen that graduated from Harbor. Also, I would like to add ANY of the staff to this wall." To be included, please submit the following: an 8x10 picture with the following information written on the back: Full Name, Year Graduated From Harbor Springs, Branch & Years Of Service.
Drop off or mail to the high school office, attention to Shauna Simkins. ADDRESS: Harbor Springs High School: Att: Shauna Simkins, 500 Spring St., Harbor Springs, Mi.49740
There is a lot of positive buzz about this project and it has been fun already, seeing the photos that are being shared. It has also struck me how many times service is generational. For example, the photos of Michelle (Langlois) Reinsmith and her mother, Doryl (Moore) Langlois. Michelle graduated in 1995 and she served in the army. Her mother graduated in 1954 and served in the air force. I know this is true in so many families. The term being used is veteran, but for those who are currently serving, please submit those photos, too.
Now a subject near and dear to my heart that you have to hear about every year. The Harbor Springs All Alumni Reunion is scheduled for July 29th at the Center Township Hall from 6-11. No charge, though donations are accepted to cover costs and if you'd like, you can bring a dish to pass. Everyone who attended, word for or had children attend Harbor Springs Schools is invited; please pass the word.
Too much sadness to go around last week, as several families were touched by loss. First, to Paul, Kendall, Doran and Darcy Stanley and their families, condolences on the passing of Enola Stanley. A sweeter woman you couldn't have asked to meet; she will be missed. Also, to Jeri Wilson, to Paige Fisher and Katie Wilson and to all of Jim's family, we offer our deepest sympathies on Jim's unexpected passing. It still seems unreal to me, I can only imagine how it feels for you. So happy to see the love and support for you last week and I hope that makes this just a little easier for you. To the family of Brian Lutz, to his children and to Marilyn (Radle) and Keith Lutz and to all of the Radles, he was taken too soon. To Tim Grimm and his family, we offer our sadness on the passing of his mother, Maybelle Grimm, and to the families of Gerald Chamberlin and Dr. Charles Anderson, you are all in our thoughts.
Changing gears now, before I get to the birthdays I want to send out a Happy Anniversary wish, and since it falls on St. Paddy's Day, I'm sure there will be tons of fun with Dick and Jane Keller. Have a wonderful day.
Birthdays begin this week on Thursday, March 16, with birthday wishes to Christi Hoffman, Robyn Kloss and Connie Borgman Malicoat and on St. Patrick's Day we say Happy Birthday to James Ransford, #9 for him, and Happy Birthday to Rosemary Sylvain (89 for her, hope I'm not telling tales out of school in saying that.) Saturday, March 18, Happy Birthday to Pat Kaniarz, Toni Fisher, Lee Cosens and Kim Bidstrup-Williams, and on the 19th to Jody Ewbank, Judy Bandemer Boyer, Nancy Kiogima and we could never forget to say Happy Birthday to Joe Flynn. Monday, March 20, Happy Birthday to Andrea Mattson, David Owen and Sara Livingston and on the 21st to Suzanne Seacord, Kim Clare and Carolyn Medawis. Last but never least, we say Happy Birthday on March 22 to Danny Cronk, Jamison Cronk, Roger Pennington and Teresa Chaney.
